Curious about how fruits and vegetables at the Market are grown?
Buying direct from the grower allows you to ask if, when and which
pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides or herbicides are used.
To make an informed choice about your food, ask the farmer:
• Are synthetic chemicals are used at any time, and if so, when?
• How do they manage pests?
• How do they manage diseases, such as fungus?
• How do they fertilize or feed the soil?
• How do they fertilize or feed the plants in grown in greenhouses?
For your own benefit, please do not:
• Ask "Do you spray?" (it doesn't tell you what is being applied, only
how it is applied - it could be an approved organic substance)
• Assume that "No pesticides" means no other chemicals are being used.
Ask about fertilizer, fungicide or herbicide use.
• Assume the farm is organic because its prices are similar to the organic produce
nearby.
Did you know?
• The Market is approximately 50% organic, 50% conventional.
• Only certified organic producers may call their produce organic.
• Organic producers must show their most current certificate. Ask to see it to be
certain.
