Garlic Sprouts
(garlic stems, garlic scapes, suan tai, shen sum)

Fast Facts
Garlic sprouts are the above-ground part of the garlic plant. These under-appreciated veggies are sweeter and have a more delicate flavour than garlic bulbs. Garlic stems make an appearance in early summer, when the flower stems of the plant are harvested very carefully so that the bulb will not be damaged and can be left to mature. The stems are usually twelve to eighteen inches in length and sold in bundles.
Cooking Info
Garlic sprouts are great on their own, or as a complement to a main dish. If quickly cooked, they are an excellent addition to dishes requiring a hint or two of garlic.
Sesame Garlic Sprouts
1 bunch of garlic sprouts (usually 200gms)
2 cloves of garlic
salt, sugar
oil
2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds (to garnish)
1. Snap off the woody ends of the garlic sprouts. Wash and cut them into 2-inch lengths.
2. Heat up a little oil, just enough to coat the pan. Saute the garlic cloves slightly to release their aroma.
3. Add the garlic sprouts, sprinkle a pinch of salt over them, and saute over moderately low heat. Stir them every 15 seconds or so to ensure that the garlic sprouts don't burn and are evenly cooked.
4. When the sprouts turn tender (after about 5 minutes), do a taste test. Add a pinch of sugar and more salt, according. Remove to a dish, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and serve.
Variation: Season with some chili powder or sliced chili if you like it spicy.

Kitsilano Farmers Market Trial Approved!
Thanks to great support from the community and the Park Board, we are happy to announce that the Kitsilano Sunday Farmers Market will open July 15 for a 14 week trial. An outstanding show of support at our open house and an excellent number of calls to the Park Board comment line helped to convince Park Board staff that it was worth a try!
Kitsilano residents can look forward to a market brimming with the best of BC produce, herbs and plants, meat, wild seafood, baking, sweet and savoury goodies and unique works by local artisans. Join us for our grand opening on July 15 and bring your friends!
The market will run every Sunday, 10am - 2pm in the parking lot next to the Kits Community Centre rink (near Connaught Park) until October 14.
