International Eat In Act Out Week: August 1st-7th

On July 30th and August 6th at Trout Lake and Nelson Park, and August 3rd at Nat Bailey Stadium, bring your picnic basket and tablecloth, and join us! Join hundreds of thousands of people across the province of BC and the world to celebrate the 1st International Eat In Act Out Week.

Initially launched by the non-profit organization, The Food Project (www.thefoodproject.org), Eat In Act Out Week is a week of events happening worldwide to promote local, healthy food and communities…a week to celebrate our local economies, our rural communities, and recognize the magnificent work of our local farmers and food producers- globally.

Eat In Act Out refers to using local food, cooking food yourself instead of eating fast food or take out, and taking action to positively change our food system. Through Eat In Act Out Week, The Food Project hopes to:
1) Encourage everyone in our communities to eat locally and think critically about their food choices
2) Build a sustainable food system where everyone has access to affordable healthy food
3) Highlight the capabilities and importance of youth in this movement
4) Engage youth in positive forms of social activism
5) Strengthen its connections, and build the movement by working together on an international event

July 30th-August 7th, fill-up your basket with fresh, local ingredients, and bring friends, family, and neighbours to your favourite park for a tasty picnic…

And, watch-out for the green ribbons! Teams of dynamic, inspired volunteers will be distributing green ribbons that we hope you’ll wear August 1st-7th, to trigger province-wide conversation about the importance of eating locally and supporting our local growers!

Eat-in, Act-out organizer, Alice Miro, says "I dream of a world, where families and neighbours take the time to cook and eat together, at the park. I dream of a secure, balanced world, where food feeds thriving local economies, fair labour practices, and healthy people- globally." August 1st-7th 2005, you can make this dream happen.

Cookbook Swap and Ask a Chef - August 6th at East Van

Swap an old cookbook for a new-to-you version and chat with local chefs about your trials and triumphs in the kitchen. Sound good? Head down to the East Vancouver Farmers Market on August 6th for our 1st ever Cookbook Swap. Swappers will receive a ticket for every book dropped off and can exchange that ticket for another book on the spot. We'll be swapping all day so come early, come late. No books to swap? You can purchase books too.
If you'd like to bring your books down ahead of time or just have books you'd like to donate, drop them off at the Market Information tent starting July 16th.

After you've swapped, why not bend the ear of a great local chef? The first Saturday of each month we'll be having local chefs at the market to answer your questions. August 6th we welcome Ken Bogas of Coco Pazzo, Andrew Skorzewski of The Lazy Gourmet, Eddy Mysliwiec of Se.ed Artisan Foods and Karen Barnaby of The Fish House in Stanley Park.
