Winter Harvest: Methods for year-round revenues.

A livable income and sustainable lifestyle are important to keeping farmers farming; attracting new farmers to agriculture is key to the future of local food production. Extending the harvest season beyond Thanksgiving is growing as a viable opportunity for increasing farm incomes. Winter Farmers Markets are gaining in popularity across North America as loyal summer customers seek out local product from their favourite summer vendors. Restaurants and grocers specializing in local produce can't find enough product in the colder months.

To address what it takes to extend the growing season, Your Local Farmers Market Society is pleased to welcome Eliot Coleman to the lower mainland to talk about planting, growing, harvesting and marketing winter produce. Conventional farmers, organic farmers, greenhouse growers and horticulturalists can all benefit from Mr. Coleman's insights. A dynamic speaker with a practical perspective he is the perfect launch to this timely series on the future of farming in BC.
